This model was inspired by something we came across in the book Morphe: MRGD by Lebbeus Woods. I particularly liked the way the holes both protruded and extruded along the surface in a regular pattern. We modeled this using a technique described on the [FORMul[a]RCH] blog. As usual it was modeled in grasshopper and then rendered in mental ray in 3ds max. The texture is a tiled noise map, and I also overlayed a subdivided iteration of the objects wireframe.
One thing I tried to tried to capture was the shadows that the coral object would create with a light on the interior, however I couldn’t achieve the right attenuation of the light in order to cast shadows on the backdrop.
